Welcome to Y6 Beech Class
Beech class teacher is Miss Sales.
This spring term promises to be an exciting and enriching journey for Beech Class!
English:
We will be diving into two captivating novels—The Lost Magician and Tom's Midnight Garden. These inspiring stories will guide our creative and analytical writing tasks throughout the term.
Maths:
Our mathematical focus will challenge us with topics such as ratio, algebra, fractions, decimals and percentages, area and perimeter, volume, and statistics.
Science:
We’ll be exploring the fascinating topics of light and the circulatory system, developing our understanding of how the body works and how light interacts with the world around us.
History:
Our historical journey will take us back to World War II, uncovering stories of resilience and bravery.
Art:
Inspired by our history lessons, we will create dramatic collages of Blitz scenes and striking war silhouettes before developing our drawing techniques.
P.E.:
In P.E., we will be focusing on gymnastics and orienteering, building strength, balance, and problem-solving skills.
French:
We will learn about different countries, languages, nationalities, and holiday destinations, expanding our global understanding.
R.E.:
Our enquiry questions will lead thoughtful discussions: Why do Hindus want to be good? and What difference does the resurrection make to Christians?
Music:
We will immerse ourselves in the sounds of World War II, learning iconic songs like We’ll Meet Again and exploring the impact of music during that era.
RSHE:
This term, we will focus on how to be great citizens and the importance of staying healthy in body and mind.
We can’t wait to embark on this exciting term of learning and discovery together!
PE information
Our PE day is Wednesday.
Please ensure children have the correct PE kit and no jewellery to be worn.
Everyday Equipment
Children should ensure they have a water bottle, reading book and their planner daily.
Planners are checked on a Friday to monitor the weekly reads. Remember children should be reading at least 4 times a week and this should be recorded in their planner.
Our spelling test is on a Monday.
Our times table test is on a Friday.
English and Maths homework needs to be returned by Friday. We know lots of you enjoy being creative as well, so please find below a homework menu your child is more than welcome to complete as well.

- Creative Writing: Write an alternative ending for The Lost Magician or Tom's Midnight Garden.
- Diary Entry: Imagine you are a character from The Lost Magician or Tom's Midnight Garden. Write a diary entry describing a significant event in the story.
- Book Review: Write a review of one of the books, explaining what you liked, disliked, and would change.
- Character Analysis: Create a character profile for a main character, including their traits, motivations, and challenges they face.
Science: Light & Circulatory System
- Light Experiment: Investigate how shadows change size during the day. Record your findings with diagrams.
- Heart Model: Create a model of the human heart using materials at home. Label its parts and explain their functions.
- Poster Design: Make a poster explaining how light travels and how we see objects.
- Healthy Lifestyle: Research and create a guide on how to keep your heart healthy, focusing on exercise and diet.
History: World War II
- Research Task: Find out about rationing during World War II. Write a diary entry as if you were living during that time.
- Propaganda Poster: Design a poster encouraging people to support the war effort.
- Family History: Interview a family member or research online to learn about someone who experienced World War II. Present your findings.
- Timeline Creation: Create a timeline of key events during World War II.
Bonus Activities
- Cross-Curricular: Write a story where a character from The Lost Magician or Tom's Midnight Garden lives during World War II.
- Art & History: Draw or paint a Blitz scene, incorporating knowledge from your history lessons.
- Light Photography: Experiment with light and shadows by creating shadow art or taking creative photos at home.
